Hello world!

Standard

Hello there. Since I opened my Facebook page and met all the inspirational people on there, I have been toying with the idea of starting up a blog. I’ve never done one before and I have to admit the prospect has been more than a little daunting!

What should I write about? Will people read it and be interested in what I say? I have absolutely no idea, but as they say ‘nothing ventured, nothing gained’ so here I go…

I think I’ll start with a little bit about myself…

Ever since I was a little girl I have adored making things and drawing. I could always be found with a pencil in hand, making ‘perfume’ or sticking bits and bobs together. I wanted to be a fashion designer or a vet before I started school. I changed my mind about being a vet when watching ‘all things great and small’ and I realised I’d have to put my hands in some rather horrible places!!! So that left fashion designer. I had a small book where I did all my clothes designing. I don’t know what happened to that dream but it all changed when I was 11. I went on a mother and daughter craft day – the subject Jewellery making. I learnt to make paper beads, felted jewellery, etc and I fell in love. I started making and selling the paper beads from old wrapping paper. Friends and family encouraged me but I never considered that I’d be able to do it as a proper job one day.

10  years later and I was doing a degree in Metalwork and Jewellery! I couldn’t believe I got to make beautiful things every day. I even got to study in South Korea for a while. I absolutely loved it there! Such an amazing country and I made such wonderful friends.

I worked as a jeweller for a while, and got a chance to deliver workshops in schools and a 10 week jewellery course for adults. I loved it. It was inspiring for me to work with such enthusiastic people and inspire them in turn. So now when I’m not working on my designs, I am a part-time Design and technology teacher – which brings a new surprise every day. My students can be a huge inspiration.

I love travelling, photography, cooking, singing, sewing (although I wouldn’t say this is my strongest skill). I read voraciously so my wonderful fiancé bought me a kindle for Christmas, I love it but I still like to read a real book from time to time. My favourite colour is teal and I can be found wearing it in some way most days. It has become the colour that all my friends associate with me.

I think that’s enough about me for now! This blog will be the outlet for my latest ideas for Laura Beth Design. I’ll share my progress on commissions, my favourite photos from my travels, the occasional ‘how to’ (the first of which will have to be the paper beads that started me on the road to being a jeweller), things that inspire me and any other madcap musings I may be having. I will warn you now, I can be very random!

I’m off out to enjoy the sun. It’s finally decided to put in an appearance!
